This rare 1865 volume by Howard Williams, an English humanitarian and vegetarian and author of the book The Ethics of Diet, offers a surprisingly sympathetic view of witchcraft, tracing its roots through several thousand years and pointing out similarities and parallels with the major world religions. Though dense and scholarly at times, The Superstitions of Witchcraft is a rewarding read for those with an interest in Wicca and in the history of the practice. The belief in the infernal art of witchcraft is perhaps the most horrid, as it certainly is the most absurd, phenomenon in the religious history of the world. Of the millions of victims sacrificed on the altars of religion this particular delusion can claim a considerable proportion. By a moderate computation, nine millions have been burned or hanged since the establishment of Christianity. Pre-Christian antiquity experienced its tremendous power, and the primitive faith of Christianity easily accepted and soon developed it. It was reserved, however, for the triumphant Church to display it in its greatest horrors: and if we deplore the too credulous or accommodative faith of the early militant Church or the unilluminated ignorance of paganism, we may still more indignantly denounce the cruel policy of Catholicism and the barbarous folly of Protestant theology which could deliberately punish an impossible crime. It is the reproach of Protestantism that this persecution was most furiously raging in the age that produced Newton and Locke. Compared with its atrocities even the Marian burnings appear as nothing: and it may well be doubted whether the fanatic zeal of the 'bloody Queen,' is no less contemptible than the credulous barbarity of the judges of the seventeenth century. -Howard Williams Mr. Howard Williams has collected a considerable number of the facts in the work before us into a short compass and discussed them in a clear and entertaining style. -The New York Times Elizabeth An Superstitions Witchcraft Luck Elizabethan superstitions & supernatural beliefs The Elizabethan era was an important period in the history of England It was known as the Renaissance age SUPERSTITIONS & BELIEFS Witches Of The Craft SUPERSTITIONS & BELIEFS Superstitious beliefs and customs are very much a part of Filipino culture We have a whole panoply of pamahiin ranging from beliefs in Superstition - Wikipedia Superstition is the belief in supernatural causalitythat one event causes another without any natural process linking the two eventssuch as astrology Superstitions Witches Of The Craft A Little Broom Lore and Superstition For Your Wednesday *Certainly the most common superstition connected with brooms is that they were used by witches to fly on Witchcraft/superstition by Maria De Los Santos on Prezi Witchcraft/superstition Project by: Maria De Los Santos Meagan Corrales Erykah Jones Nylaah Ross Elizabethan Witchcraft and Witches The Elizabethan belief in witches Superstitions About Witches and Broomsticks - The Psychic Well Superstitions About Witches and Broomsticks by Mary-Anne Alvaro We celebrate Halloween with some curious history about witches and their brooms Elizabethan era Witchcraft Beliefs and Superstitions by Elizabethan Era Superstitions Outline Superstitions Background Origin of Superstitions Superstitions and Witches Witchcraft Superstitions Superstitions Superstitions Witchcraft - Pagan Wiccan Occult and Magic Even those who say they are not superstitious tend not to walk under a ladder or they throw spilled salt over their left shoulder superstitions have been the stuff Superstition in India - Wikipedia Superstition in India is considered a widespread social problem Superstition refers to any belief or practice which is "Witch hunting: Victims of superstition" Witchcraft and Superstition in Italy Witchcraft & Superstition in Modern Italy - The Case of Carole Compton The case of Carole Compton the 'nanny they called a witch' as the newspapers dubbed her is
